Downtown Saturdays

12/08/2012
i used to be a little bit of a lazy person. and i like to think it's because i didn't have the right person to motivate me! but then i happened to marry the freakin' energizer bunny. he never stops, this man! and anyway, since i married him i find myself less and less willing to be sitting around at home. i go stir crazy pretty easily, and i need to get out and do something! we are less than home bodies at our house.

well ahhnway, today is saturday. saturdays husband works and leaves us home to play without him. although typically we spend our saturday mornings/lunches on walks to the little park down the street, as of late that hasn't satisfied my "get out and do something" craving. so today, i came up with a new idea-and by golly, we have a new saturday tradition on our hands! we had a delightful day!

you see, mister j and i bundled up in our warmest beanies, coats and gloves. we headed out the door and i drove us the short distance to center street, where i parked a couple of blocks down. i packed up the little guy in his stroller, all bundled and warm, and we walked through downtown.

did you know there is something magical about downtown main street around christmas time!? with their christmas lights strung this way and that, frosted gingerbread houses and carefully decorated christmas trees set up as window displays in every corner, and red ribbon wreaths hanging on the doorways. with large groups of people, dressed warmly in their coats and boots, walking through the stores to buy presents and chocolates for the holiday.

we went in and out of stores, reading books at the book table, looking at coats at the sportsman, walking through the echoing halls of the coppermill, waving to the nice but creepy old man smoking on the corner. after turning and heading back down, we decided to stop in for lunch at great harvest to warm up. and the nice boy working the counter gave us a free slice of freshly made gingerbread! i let mister j choose our seats, and we munched on fresh sandwiches the size of his face and sipped a rootbeer that we shared.

after lunch, we went around the corner with the hopes of getting some taffy to satisfy my sweet tooth, but the store was closed. so we took pictures of it instead. oh, and this was after we went in the wrong door first, a door which held overly priced but gorgeous southern antique couches and chairs. a sweet old lady sat in the corner, and i pretended like i had meant to walk into that very store. i told her i was looking for my grandma, and that i would bring her back with me soon. i am very quick at coming up with stories in awkward situations, my friends!

then our tummies were full, and i had one more place for us to go. we took a nice walk down center street to visit all the historic houses with their wrap around porches and their iron gate fences. I've always loved center street. any season, it's gorgeous. we walked, and i made daydreams of us living in a yellow brick victorian home, where any day we'd like we could walk down the street and get some fresh gingerbread. it would be delightful. in fact, i'm just sure i will satisfy this dream one day! living on center street!

and with that, my sweet little boy promptly fell asleep as i buckled him up in the car and we drove home for his afternoon nap.

oh, so this is how family traditions are created? by accident? only the best ones! yes, this is the best new tradition i have stumbled upon. most saturdays, after breakfast and cartoons, i will say "do you want to go downtown??" and he will be so excited to get ready for the day and jump in the car, knowing exactly where we are going to spend our morning and lunch. oh, and of course daddy will no longer work saturdays so he will be in on the tradition with us. and mister j will grow up with historic downtown as one of his favorite childhood memories.
